I am facing problems with animating an activity diagram. I am using Rhapsody Developer for C++ 7.5.2 with the SysML profile.

Animating state charts is no problem, but this time I try to animate a block having an activity diagram as the main behaviour. When I run the simulation and open the instance's activity diagram, there is nothing highlighted in pink, nor does it change its appearance in any way, it just looks like the normal activity diagram for modification.

I have no sequence diagram, is it maybe necessary to have one in order to animate an activity diagram? Any other points I have to consider?

You have to switch off analysis mode - thats a tickbox on the general tab (Analysis Only) for the activity diagram. You must do this before drawing the diagram ! The reason being that analysis mode switches off a whole bunch of drawing rules - which lets you draw any kind of activity diagram. If you know you are going to execute it then you have to work within a more rigid set of drawing rules - eg fan vs fan out for forks and joins.

Note that in 7.5.3 you have the option of executing the Activity using Token Flow semantic instead of Statechart Semantic - which is how the Activity will execute in 7.5.2
